How much protein on GLP-1 medication?
Most adults losing weight on a GLP-1 medication aim for 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight a day. That is the range in the 2025 nutrition advisory from four US obesity and nutrition societies, and in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2025–2030. For many women that lands between about 75 and 125 grams a day, and for many men between 100 and 150.
Two details change your own number: which weight you multiply, and whether you lift. This guide shows both, gives a table by height and weight, and then the harder part: fitting that much protein into a day when the medication has turned your appetite down.
The short answer, in grams
- Range: 1.2–1.6 g per kg a day while you are losing weight. The low end is the default; the high end suits people doing strength work 2 or more times a week.
- The floor: 0.8 g per kg is the long-standing recommended amount for adults who are not losing weight. Below that on a large calorie cut, you are short.
- The simple version: the same advisory gives a flat 80–120 g a day as an alternative for people who would rather not do the math.
- Per meal: about 25–30 g at each of 3–4 small meals gets most people there.
- Kidney disease: the right amount is different (often lower). Ask your doctor before you raise protein.
Why protein matters more on these medications
Weight lost on the shot, like weight lost on any diet, includes some lean mass, meaning muscle plus water, organs and connective tissue. In the body-scan part of the STEP 1 trial of semaglutide, 5.3 of the 13.6 kg people lost (about 38%) was lean mass. In SURMOUNT-1, about a quarter of the weight lost on tirzepatide was lean, the same share as on placebo. The medication is not shown to strip muscle faster than a diet does; the concern is a large, fast loss while eating very little protein and doing no strength work.
And people do eat very little. Trials report energy intake falling by 16–39% compared with placebo. In one 2025 study of 60 adults on GLP-1 medications (mean age 49) who kept 3-day food records, only 43% reached 1.2 g of protein per kg, and 10% reached 1.6. When the whole plate shrinks, protein shrinks with it unless you put it first.
Age adds to it. Muscle mass falls by roughly 3–8% per decade after 30, and faster after 60, so a 55-year-old has less to spare than a 30-year-old. More on this side of it in how to prevent muscle loss on GLP-1.
Which weight do you multiply?
This is where most online numbers go wrong. "1 gram per pound" or "1.6 g per kg of your current weight" works for a lean lifter. For someone who is 230 lb at 5'7", it gives a target of 165–230 g a day, which is hard to eat on a full appetite and close to impossible on a GLP-1. The advisory itself warns that actual weight "can significantly overestimate" protein needs in people with obesity.
The usual fix in clinical nutrition is an adjusted body weight:
- Ideal weight for your height (the Devine formula): women 45.5 kg plus 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 feet; men 50 kg plus 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 feet.
- Is your weight more than 1.15 times that? If not, use your actual weight in kg (pounds ÷ 2.2).
- If it is, adjusted weight = ideal weight + 0.4 × (actual weight − ideal weight). Pharmacy uses 0.4; some dietitians use 0.25, which gives a slightly lower number.
- Multiply by 1.2 (no strength work yet) or 1.6 (strength work twice a week or more). Round to the nearest 5 g.
Worked example. A woman, 5'4", 200 lb. Ideal weight: 45.5 + (4 × 2.3) = 54.7 kg. Actual weight: 200 ÷ 2.2 = 90.7 kg, which is more than 1.15 × 54.7 (62.9), so adjust: 54.7 + 0.4 × (90.7 − 54.7) = 69.1 kg. Target: 1.2 × 69.1 = 83 g, so about 85 g a day; with strength training, 1.6 × 69.1 = 111 g, so about 110 g.
Some programmes use 1 g per kg of current weight instead (WeightWatchers' GLP-1 programme does). For the woman above that is about 90 g, close to our low end. The methods agree more than the headlines suggest; it is the per-pound rules that run high.
Protein targets by height and weight
Worked out with the method above (adjusted weight where it applies, rounded to 5 g). Find the row nearest to you; your exact number will be within about 5–10 g.
| Who | Weight | Without strength work (1.2 g/kg) | With strength work (1.6 g/kg) | "1 g per lb" would say |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Woman 5'2" | 170 lb | 75 g | 95 g | 170 g |
| Woman 5'4" | 160 lb | 75 g | 100 g | 160 g |
| Woman 5'4" | 200 lb | 85 g | 110 g | 200 g |
| Woman 5'4" | 250 lb | 95 g | 125 g | 250 g |
| Woman 5'7" | 180 lb | 85 g | 110 g | 180 g |
| Woman 5'7" | 230 lb | 95 g | 125 g | 230 g |
| Man 5'10" | 220 lb | 100 g | 135 g | 220 g |
| Man 5'10" | 280 lb | 115 g | 150 g | 280 g |
| Man 6'0" | 250 lb | 110 g | 145 g | 250 g |
Notice how little the number moves between 200 and 250 lb. Extra body fat needs little extra protein; your height and your muscle set most of the need. Re-work your number every 10–15 lb you lose, or every couple of months.

How much protein does a woman on GLP-1 need?
The same method, with the women's line of the formula. In the table, most women land between 75 and 100 g a day without strength work and 95 to 125 g with it. Women start with less muscle than men of the same weight, and muscle falls with age, so there is less margin. If you are 50 or over, aim for the top half of your range and add strength work; the training is what tells the body to keep the muscle that the protein feeds.
How to split it over a small appetite
A 100 g day sounds like a lot when half a sandwich fills you. Spread across the day it is 3 meals of 25–30 g plus one small protein snack. Some habits that make it doable:
- Protein first. Eat the protein part of the plate before the rest. If you stop after five bites, those five bites counted.
- Front-load. Put your biggest protein meal at the time of day your appetite is best, often the first meal after waking.
- Small and dense. Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, tuna, chicken and tofu give a lot of protein in a small volume.
- Drink it on hard days. A protein shake (often 20–30 g; check the label) goes down when solid food won't. Sip it over 20–30 minutes if nausea is a problem. Our guide to protein shakes on GLP-1 says what to look for on the label.
- Keep it cold and plain when you feel queasy. Cold foods and mild flavours tend to be easier than hot, greasy or strongly smelling ones.
- Set times. With little hunger, "eat when hungry" can mean one meal a day. Eat on a clock: for example 8, 12, 4 and 7.
Protein in common foods
Standard USDA values; brands vary, so check labels.
| Food | Portion | Protein |
|---|---|---|
| Chicken breast, cooked | 3 oz | 26 g |
| Protein shake | 1 bottle | about 25 g (label) |
| Salmon, cooked | 3 oz | 22 g |
| Tuna, canned | 3 oz | 20 g |
| Greek yogurt, plain | 3/4 cup | 17 g |
| Eggs | 2 large | 12 g |
| Cottage cheese | 1/2 cup | 12 g |
| Firm tofu | 3 oz | 12 g |
| Turkey slices | 2 oz | 10 g |
| Milk | 1 cup | 8 g |
| String cheese | 1 stick | 7 g |
| Beans, cooked | 1/2 cup | 7 g |
A 100-gram day on a small appetite
| When | What | Protein |
|---|---|---|
| 8 am | 2 eggs scrambled with 1/4 cup cottage cheese stirred in, half a slice of toast | about 20 g |
| 11 am | 3/4 cup Greek yogurt with a few berries | 17 g |
| 1 pm | 3 oz tuna or chicken on crackers or a few salad leaves | 20–26 g |
| 4 pm | Protein shake, sipped | about 25 g |
| 7 pm | Half a small plate: 2 oz salmon or tofu, vegetables | about 12–15 g |
| Total | about 95–100 g |
No single meal here is big. That is the point: on a GLP-1, five small protein stops tend to work better than three normal meals.
Signs you may not be getting enough
There is no home test for protein, and the signs people worry about (feeling weaker getting out of a chair or up the stairs, workouts that stop progressing, feeling drained) have many causes: too few calories overall, low iron, poor sleep, dehydration. If they last, tell your prescriber rather than guessing. The useful check you can do yourself is to write down three normal days, add up the grams, and compare them with your number. In the 2025 food-record study, most people on these medications who did this came in under 1.2 g per kg.
Can you eat too much protein?
For healthy adults, the ranges here are well within what studies use. We cap our own targets at 2.0 g per kg of adjusted weight. Protein is a different story if you have chronic kidney disease: the kidney guidelines (KDOQI/KDIGO) suggest around 0.8 g per kg for many people with CKD and avoiding more than 1.3, with different targets on dialysis. If you have kidney disease, are vomiting, or can't keep fluids down, talk to your doctor before you raise protein. Drinking enough water matters on these medications anyway, and more so on a higher-protein day.
Protein is half of it
The advisory is direct about this: protein alone is likely not enough to protect lean mass. Muscle is kept when it is used. The US activity guideline is muscle-strengthening work on 2 or more days a week, for all major muscle groups; the advisory suggests 3. In diet trials of older adults, adding resistance training kept most of the lean mass that diet alone lost. That training does not need a gym: a chair, a wall and two full water bottles are enough to start. Our guide on preventing muscle loss on GLP-1 lays out a twice-a-week home routine.
Questions people ask
How much protein should I eat a day on Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound?
The same range applies to all of them: 1.2–1.6 g per kg a day, using an adjusted weight if you are well above the ideal weight for your height. The guidance is about the weight loss, not the brand of medication.
Is 60 grams of protein enough on a GLP-1?
For most adults losing weight, no. 60 g is about 0.8 g per kg for a 75 kg (165 lb) person, the amount for adults who are not losing weight. Most people in the table above need 75 g or more.
Should I count protein from my goal weight or my current weight?
Goal weight is a rough shortcut some sites use. Adjusted body weight is a standard clinical method that sits between your ideal and current weight. Either is better than current weight alone if you carry a lot of extra weight.
Do I need protein shakes?
No, but they help on low-appetite days. Food first when you can; a shake is a backup that is easy to drink slowly.
Does protein help with nausea on GLP-1?
Not directly. Small, plain, cold protein foods are often easier to keep down than large or greasy meals. If nausea stops you eating or drinking for a day or more, contact your prescriber.
